We’re Facing History and Ourselves, an organization created in 1976 by educators who believed that instilling intellectual vigor and curiosity goes hand-in-hand with teaching facts and figures.

Today, we have over 180 staff located in offices throughout the United States as well as entities in Toronto and London. Yearly, we reach nearly three million students through our network of more than 115,000 educators.   

Our Facing History team represents a wide range of roles that include delivering hands-on support for educators and schools, creating outstanding professional development and classroom resources, improving how we serve our audience through technology, and nurturing the supporters who make it possible to expand our work.

Internships

Internships at Facing History and Ourselves are typically a mixture of core projects and administrative support. Interns are paired with direct supervisors and the intern is assigned projects based on the need of Facing History and the individual supervisor. There are a variety of projects that should align with the intern’s interests. Across the board, strong learning opportunities are provided that expose participants to Facing History content and teaching approach.

The summer internship in our Headquarters office (Brookline, MA) typically runs for 8-9 weeks starting in early June through mid August. We provide orientation, regular check-ins, an opportunity to connect with other Interns, participation in staff meetings and social events, exposure to our core work, access to our resources, and dinner with our President and CEO. At the end of the summer we have a small gathering to present on the projects completed over the summer.

The number of internships offered, the length (part time to full time), and specific assignments will vary depending on organizational needs and an intern’s availability. Internships are generally unpaid.

Our Mission

Facing History and Ourselves is an international educational and professional development organization whose mission is to use lessons of history to challenge teachers and their students to stand up to bigotry and hate.

By studying the historical development of the Holocaust and other examples of genocide, students make the essential connection between history and the moral choices they confront in their own lives.
