Join Us Online for Your Summer Professional Development

This summer Facing History and Ourselves will offer facilitated online seminars for educators looking to develop and implement our curriculum and methodology with their students.

What To Expect From Our Online Seminars

Each offering is a real-time, interactive online classroom that incorporates our methodology.

You will experience what our approach looks and feels like and connect with educators across the globe in whole and small group sessions facilitated by Facing History experts.

Who Should Attend?

Our summer offerings are open to any educator who is looking to use or integrate a Facing History unit in their curriculum, and will be particularly relevant to 6th–12th grade US history, humanities, and English language arts teachers and curriculum specialists. Each summer seminar will take place between Monday and Thursday over one calendar week, while summits will run Tuesday through Thursday.

We estimate a time commitment of up to four hours a day for synchronous and asynchronous sessions, with live sessions taking place between 11:30 AM – 4:30 PM EST, but timing of each live session is subject to vary across offerings. A detailed schedule will be provided one week before the seminar start date.

To successfully create a purposeful learning opportunity, we ask for your participation in all seminar or summit activities. At the same time, we understand that life is challenging right now, and all of us are juggling work and home commitments. We look forward to being in community together, and know that the more often we gather, the richer the experience will be.

When applicable, each cohort will be invited to a regional virtual meeting with a local Facing History coach during or after the experience. Districts can purchase additional coaching time with a Facing History expert for their educators.

Cost: Registration fee is $50.

Holocaust and Human Behavior

Monday, August 2 – Thursday, August 5

Help students wrestle with the profound moral questions raised by the study of the Holocaust and foster their skills in civic engagement, ethical reasoning, critical thinking, and empathy — all of which are necessary for sustaining democracy.

This online seminar features Facing History’s seminal resource Holocaust and Human Behavior and is intended for 6-12th grade world history, U.S. history, humanities, or English language arts educators.

Teaching for Equity and Justice Summit

Schooling is one of the many systems in the US that has been and continues to be shaped by the historic legacies of racism and inequity. Educators and school leaders, join us for a dynamic 3-day summit designed to equip you with the context, tools, and strategies you need to address these troubling and historically rooted disparities in your school.

U.S. History: A New Approach to Teaching the Reconstruction Era

How does society rebuild after extraordinary division and trauma, when the ideals and values of democracy are most vulnerable? 

Join us as we examine the Reconstruction era and learn to teach about this significant period in US history using an approach that helps students connect this history to their own lives and the choices they make today.

Teaching Coming of Age in a Complex World

Stories have the power to transform the way young people see themselves and others. Experience our approach to teaching Coming-of-Age literature, designed to increase student agency, empathy, critical thinking and literacy skills, and belief they can make a difference in the world.

Identity, Membership and Belonging: A Summit on Teaching Immigration

Dates: Tuesday, July 27 – Thursday, July 29

Join us to explore the history and contemporary realities of immigration in the United States. We’ll consider how the choices and actions of immigrants have shaped ideas about freedom and democracy and influenced what it means to be American.

After Participants Attend a Seminar:

  1. You will receive a Certificate of Completion: Awarded upon successful completion of the 3-day seminar for 16 professional development hours or the 4-day seminar for 20 professional development hours. If you are an educator based in New York, after taking this seminar you are eligible for CTLE hours. If you are an educator based in Illinois, after taking this seminar you are eligible for clock hours. Please contact us at support@facinghistory.org for more information.

  2. We offer continuing coaching and support—from our Program Associates, who can answer questions, problem solve, and help you plan your unit; through our extensive online resource library; and at follow-up webinars and other events.

  3. Become part of the Facing History educator network, with access to a rich slate of educator resources, including unit and lesson plans, study guides, and multimedia.
