Connect with Facing History at the NCTE Convention
The National Council of Teachers of English is holding its annual NCTE convention for four days in November—and Facing History & Ourselves will be there!
Join us in Columbus, Ohio Thursday, November 16 through Sunday, November 19 for Conexiones 2023.
This is a chance for ELA educators to connect with Facing History in-person and get an introduction to our resources directly from our curriculum development and program staff.
NCTE brings thousands of people who touch the education space together to share and learn from one another, which perfectly embodies this year’s theme of “Communicate, Collaborate, Create.” This event is an opportunity to gain professional development and other helpful and timely insights that can infuse new energy into your education work.
If you’re also headed to NCTE, make sure to stop by booth 109 to say hello to Facing History ELA team members and chat with us about your classroom or school needs. We’re looking forward to meeting familiar and new faces, plus we’ll have handy resources and freebies available to pick up.

We are excited to once again be presenting at NCTE, sharing some of our evolving body of ELA lessons and curriculum. Whether you’ve been using Facing History for years or are newer to our content, our 2023 sessions will introduce ideas and materials that any ELA teacher can integrate into their school year. Facing History NCTE Sessions
Building Youth Power, Agency, and Voice through Text Sets
Thursday, November 16 | 9:30 a.m. - 10:45 a.m.
Facilitated by Karen Scher, Lisa Lefstein-Berusch and educator Rebekah Room D-281/282
This interactive panel discussion will cover how the themes of power, agency, and voice can be integrated into an ELA curriculum. We will showcase an array of resources and participants will explore how multimodal, student-centered lessons and activities can be used in classrooms. Additionally, we will share reflections on how students have engaged with Facing History’s Coming of Age collection and ways for teachers to bring these materials into their pedagogical practice.
All-Community Reads: Cultivating Community with a Shared Text

Facing History staff and two Ohio-based middle school teachers will share their years of experience implementing all-school reads, making a potentially daunting project a feasible and exciting opportunity for a school. We’ll look at Facing History’s Whole School Read Planning Guide and discuss the steps to plan and implement an all community read. The panel will address questions such as how to choose an engaging and accessible text, what to do to generate excitement among the educator community, how to plan a kickoff event, and where to find relevant supplemental resources.
