Katy M. and Francia G. have demonstrated undeniable qualities as upstanders not only in the classroom but also in the Animo Jackie Robinson school community. The “dynamic duo” have excelled academically and worked diligently to not allow their educational disabilities to limit their education in any way, shape or form. Both ladies have taken on challenging classes, including Honors courses, and have successfully applied and been accepted to four-year universities.

Their academic achievements are nothing compared to their activism and leadership in the school community. In addition to being in various clubs on campus, including Link Crew, ASB, TPP (Transition Partnership Program), Katy and Francia founded and led The Wonders of Having a Disability Club, which focuses on teaching students about their disabilities, so that they don’t feel hindered or ashamed of who they are as learners. “My learning disability is part of me, it doesn’t define me” is a saying they are quick to share when talking about themselves.

The impact of the work of these young ladies is immense. Their efforts have resulted in numerous acknowledgements in and outside of the classroom. Katy and Francia’s dedication and hard work to promote a healthy school environment and promote student voice have made them a force to be reckoned with.
